What happens in a neuropsychological assessment?
The assessment process consists of a clinical interview, standardized assessments, and a feedback session completed 1-2 weeks after the initial evaluation.
Clinical Interview
During the initial appointment Dr. Brunet will meet with you (and a trusted family member or caregiver if you choose) to ask questions about your symptoms, medical and mental health history, and other relevant background. Then Dr. Brunet will administer standardized cognitive assessments to measure areas including memory, attention, spatial skills, language, and executive functioning.
Assessment
The assessment will take place in a private office space in the Los Angeles area (with travel to surrounding areas possible in some cases). Appointments typically occur on Thursday mornings, though alternative days and times are available if needed.
It is best to come to evaluations well-rested and well-fed and be able to put forth your best effort and attention during the appointment. Breaks will be offered throughout and it is a good idea to bring water and snacks. Individuals are often anxious about the appointment and unsure what to expect. Dr. Brunet will discuss the details with you at the start of the appointment and ensure that you are comfortable and feel supported and confident in the assessment process. This is a collaborative process and any feedback is always welcome throughout our work together.
The interview and assessment typically takes 3-4 hours but can vary depending on the type of evaluation required.
Results
Following your initial evaluation, Dr. Brunet will then compare test results to a relevant comparison group (such as healthy individuals in the same age range) to determine strengths and weaknesses, and then integrate all the data and information gathered to determine a diagnosis, discuss contributing factors or likely causes, and make recommendations and plans for treatment.
You will receive a detailed report of the assessment results and recommendations and Dr. Brunet will meet with you and any trusted family members or other individuals important to you to explain the results in detail, answer questions, and discuss recommendations for treatment.
Dr. Brunet does not directly partner with insurance companies but can provide what is known as a “superbill” that you can take to your insurance company and may be able to reimbursed, often in part, for the evaluation if it is a covered service.
