What is neuropsychology?
Neuropsychology is a specialty area within clinical psychology with a focus on understanding the relationship between brain functioning and symptoms. Neuropsychologists evaluate a person’s symptoms by asking questions and completing standardized tests to measure thinking and memory. A neuropsychological evaluation is like a brain check-up.
Even though doctors can take images of the brain (such as a CT scan or MRI) this does not tell us how the brain is actually functioning. This is why an individualized neuropsychological assessment is useful in determining someone’s diagnosis, making recommendations to improve symptoms and functioning, and understanding what kinds of strengths and limitations a person might exhibit in their daily lives.
About Neuropsychology
When can neuropsychology be most beneficial?
Diagnosis
A neuropsychological evaluation can be particularly helpful in determining a neurocognitive disorder diagnosis (such as dementia) related to conditions including:
Neurodegenerative disease (Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy body disease, frontotemporal lobar degeneration)
Stroke
Traumatic brain injury

Epilepsy and seizures
Accommodation Support
Neuropsychological services can also help support accommodations in academic and workplace settings related to cognitive symptoms involved in conditions including:
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
Learning disorders (such as dyslexia)
Mood and anxiety disorders
Capacity Evaluations
Neuropsychologists can also determine someone’s ability to make decisions for themselves if there is concern that cognitive impairment may be affecting someone’s ability to make decisions about their health, finances, or living situation.
